Title: Make No Compromises When It Comes to Your Bird
Post by Dominic on Aug 23rd, 2011, 2:27am

One of the first things I learnt when I began researching parrots is the danger that non-stick cookware poses to them. Despite this I foolishly let someone else have their way, and allowed them to use non-stick in the house. I had already swapped out the non-stick for stainless steel, but she complained it was too hard to clean and promised to be vigilant. I got lax and let her have her way even though I knew she's a complete klutz.

This Saturday morning Sylas passed away. I've cried more in these past few days than I have in probably the last 20 years. I awoke at about 10 AM to the worst screech from my bird, I thought she might have got her leg stuck to a toy so I quickly ran to the living room to see her already on her back. She stopped screaming once she saw me, I picked her up and 10 seconds later she was already gone. I examined the cage to see what might have happened, then I smelt something coming from the kitchen. My mom had left a non-stick pan on max, forgot, and went out for breakfast. Sylas was not even making any noise, prior to the screech and just like that she had left us.

Just a few months ago I was celebrating Sylas's birthday she had just turned one. BCCs have a lifespan of 20-30 years. Everyday when I came home from work, Sylas would fly to the door and greet me with a "hello baby!". That was always one of the highlights of the day.

Don't be like me, if you have any non-stick cookware, possibly hazardous chemicals, plants etc just throw them out. It's just not worth it. Don't just pack them away like me, and chuck them. Their respiratory systems truly are sensitive. Don't make any compromises when it comes to your bird's well being.

Oh Dominic, I am so sorry that Sylas has passed away. I know how much you loved that little bird and how much joy she brought to your life from all your writings. Thank you for the information, I was not aware that hairdryers have Teflon also and always dried Leon with one, but no longer. Take care, she will be forever in your heart, I know this because I feel Ozzie and Bubba in mine always.

Thank you Pam. You're right she will always be remembered. She was pretty much the perfect birdie. Quiet when she was supposed to be, affectionate, confident, and a fast learner.

I am very upset to hear that your birdie is no more and i can understand that how it feels to lose someone whom you adore the most and love and care about them...But no matter you can share your love for each and every creature you came across and they would in turn love you much as well..!!!
