Title: Spike
Post by birdgranna on Jul 29th, 2011, 1:34pm

There is a new fid at Birdgranna's. Spike the Lutino cockatiel. She belonged to somebody's grandmother who died and they couldn't keep her. She is quite old. She has yet to come out of her cage. She has been here for over 2 weeks with the door open. To minimize the stress of all of the other birds around her, I have put her cage in a large flight where she is the sole occupant. Most of the other tiels are out in the outdoor aviary so that was vacant. She will not venture out. Odd. She seems not too sociable so I am not pushing her to come out. Poor little thing probably misses grandma. :'(

Little Spike will not come out of her cage! The door is always open but she won't come out. She cannot fly . she fell out a few times and just sat on the floor :'( She eats well and plays a bit with a few toys. she is a very sedentary bird. I learned yesterday that she is 16. I have put a few tiels with her in the flight where her cage is. They don't venture in her space and she is not at all interested in any of them. The other 3 will be coming in this weekend. I'm thinking I should bring her out of the flight and put her cage next to my 2 whiteface cockatiels Niiko and Pogge. Pogge also does not fly. Niiko comes out but not the Pogge. so perhaps the 2 homebodies can chat to each other when Niiko goes out to play  :) Getting crowded here :D

Spike is still very quiet and does not come out of her cage. she cannot see properly and is quite crippled so that is why. She spends most of her days on a platform perch which I have found she prefers to a regular perch. She lives alone now by choice, away from the bird rooms. she has a nice sunny spot near the window, enjoys her food, tolerates a misting once in a while. Other wise is very quiet and no problem at all.
Sadly I lost 2 tiels this winter. Old Nibbles from old age, and a young whiteface, Pogge. The young boy was not healthy when I got him and was very nervous. I tried to build him up and nourish him and he lived for 2 more years. Sad to pass so young. That is the worst thing about rescues...sometimes no matter what you do , you can't save them :'(
